Switzerland: Hamilton Lodge

At 1450 meters high on the Rinderberg Mountain and only accessible by cable car or snowmobile, Hamilton Lodge in de Gstaad-region truly combines the best of both worlds. At daytime the restaurant and sunny terrace are bustling with energetic skiers and snowboarders, drawn by the infamous Hamilton burger (with Swiss beef) or massive goat cheese salad. At night and early morning the place is as quiet and secluded as a mountain lodge can be.

What we loved: the energy during the day, the quietness during the night and early morning.

The rooms: 23 bedrooms (double rooms, family rooms and suites). The standard rooms can be quite small.

Play outdoor: skiing and snowboarding on the mountains around Gstaad and Zweisimmen, as well as Cross-country skiing. Snowshoe hiking on Eggli mountain or Lauenen and dogsledding in Lauenen. In summer the whole area is a hikers and mountainbikers paradise.

Unwind: on the veranda of the small spa, or in the outdoor hot tub.

Food: the restaurant has an excellent menu, ranging from classic French dishes and simple but filling hamburgers/veggie burgers to international desserts like Pavlova. When you sleep in Hamilton Lodge, you’ll probably dine here as well, since the hotel is only accessible by cable car or snow mobile.

Location of Hamilton Lodge: halfway up the mountain in Zweisimmen, near Gstaad in the Swiss region of Berner Oberland.

How to get there: Zweisimmen is one hour driving from Bern and 2½ hours from Zürich. Trains in Switzerland are punctual and run frequently.
